I have been trying to learn to be still and know that He is God. I fidget and squirm and can't seem to settle. Then it came to me. I find it so easy for my mind to go into automatic when I knit. I sort out what is going on in my life and emotions that are built up inside and verses come to mind and I pray without working hard at it. This morning when I was trying to be still it came to me ...I can be still while I knit. Thank you Lord for giving me this revelation this morning!
I don't think that I am the only one who struggles with this and I know it isn't limited to knitting. A person can knit, crochet, make bread, draw, needlework, mend clothes, maybe bead, just some kind of handiwork with your hands. I think you could even take this and apply it to walking, running, swimming, gardening, anything that is repetitious and lets the mind relax. What do you like to do that will help your mind relax enough to let you hear the Lord talking to you?
Being still in the Lord is not something I do well - it's something that I am learning to do each day.
ReplyDeleteI haven't found a task (like knitting) that I can "be still" with in order to help me be closer to my Creator. I guess I'll need to look into this further.
Mary, Thank you! It's good to know I can sit and do while my mind ponders the things of God, and He helps me sort out my day, my activities, my problems or issues. So good to know I'm not the only one who can't just sit. :)
ReplyDeleteLove to you,
Christine
Love this! I grew up in a Quaker meeting where you must be very still during time with the Lord. It was so hard to do. I love to sit under trees out in nature and feel the breezes and smell nature. This makes me feel very much at peace.

Hmmm. Good things to think about. I don't really have something like knitting. I must consider this. Thanks, Mary!
ReplyDeleteI wish that I had a skill like knitting to do because I think you are so right in what you say. For me, I have such thumbs that I have to concentrate on it.
ReplyDeleteSo for me? It's walking.
I love the encouragement to use it as BE STILL time.
And you, my friend, would be VERY WELCOME at our table. I'll save the place card for just such a time.
ReplyDeleteWhat lovely knitting and what a wonderful way to be still. Sometimes I knit or crochet, sometimes I go for a walk, and other times I simply sit and stare out my window at the trees.
ReplyDeleteAs busy modern women, it's important to allow ourselves the time to be still, to ponder, to pray. Thanks for the reminder, Mary. :)
Blessings, ~Lisa
Hi Mary,
ReplyDeleteIt's been too long since I stopped by for a visit. I always enjoy reading your posts.
I also find it hard to be still. I can get so distracted or become too busy when I should be prayering or reading scripture.
I really like your idea of being still while knitting and think I'll try the same thing. I also find if a take a walk I tend to think about things to pray about.
Oh this goes with my Monday post on my devotional...I know sometimes I just need to be completely still, but I can walk and hear God like He is walking right beside me...so being still before Him is a heart issue, which you have learned.
ReplyDeleteHi Mary - Exciting news!! I'm awarding you with the Leibster Award. :) To find out what it is and pick it up, go here:

Mary, you are exactly right. I can solve all the world's problems while doing any kind of handiwork...unfortunately, I haven't been able to do it and listen for God's voice or to pray. My mind wanders from one subject to another. I am going to try to stay focused, next time I pull out my crochet. By the way, your knitting is beautiful. I wish I could knit! :(
ReplyDeleteI'm learning this valuable lesson right now. Thank you for sharing...It was a blessing to read tonight.
ReplyDeleteFor me its weeding in the garden. I just find this time so relaxing and peaceful. The second is writing in my journal and letting the thoughts flow off the pen. Tina at Morningstar Academy
ReplyDeleteGardening or just sitting in the porch swing and gently swinging.
ReplyDeleteI'm happy for you that you have found a way to "be still" and listen.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Tracy
So glad you have found the thing that helps you be still. For me I think it changes all the time. Right now, for me, as funny as it sounds, it's my time in the shower. :)
