It's A Winter Wonderland Here

I have really noticed that when winter comes I tend to with drawl a little and reflect. I guess this is my way of hibernating. Then I notice that I have done that and I then make a extra effort to come out and let others know what I am doing, learning, and thinking. I don't know if that is because I am so tired from what I did in the fall or if it is the season influencing me. We have had a funny winter like so many others. We have been hovering around freezing and I wish It would just make up it's mind and "be" winter. We like it about -4 to -10*C about 20* F is nice. It makes the snow powdery and easier to drive in. But at that same token not TOO cold either.
I have been learning a lot about my new way of cooking by using Nourishing Traditions and blog sites that base their recipes on that style of cooking. I have been making bread, cream cheese, buttermilk, fermented bean spreads and so much more. I wanted to share my bread recipe but I have one little hang up. I have stopped using olive oil while baking and I am trying to learn how to have light and fluffy bread while using butter instead. I haven't nailed it quite yet and I hope to real soon. As soon as I do I will share my recipe, I promise. But before I do that I will have to show what is on my knitting needles and in my yarn basket. I hope you are warm and happy where ever you are.

  1. Beautiful photos! We are trying to stay warm, but it is bitterly cold here. Our high today was -28 and wind chills have been close to -40! I'm just grateful I don't really have to go out, another bonus for homeschooling, I don't have drive the kids to school on days like today.

    1. I love the fact as a homeschool mama I don't have to make sure the kids get to school safely. I just have to make sure they get up, lol.

  3. I think you have every right to be catching up your "introspective" time after all you go through in the other seasons! You don't have a lot of down time then and I would think you NEED to have some now. :-) Can't wait to hear more about your bread. Could you also share some of the websites you like that you mentioned? (((hugs)))

  4. Take this time to totally rest Mary. You have had a very busy of season, and your body, your mind, your soul requires calmness now. You are tending to your flock sweet friend. You are learning new ways of feeding your family. All of these take priority and what joy they bring to you my friend!

It is winter here in the mountains also...not snowy, but cold and windy. I am enjoying this season more than before.

    Be blessed sweet friend,

    m.

  7. That snow is so pretty! It has actually been in the 40s here which is super unusual for January; we're used to the teens and even below zero. I "hibernate" in winter, too, though this winter I'm very busy with boys and school--homeschool and college. Then there's chauffeuring boys and husband (to phys. therapy)! Things will settle into a routine soon, I hope. We had our first fire in our little fireplace last night! It was so nice.

    Have a beautiful week, Mary!

  11. We only have some snow flurries, I guess all the snow is staying up by you. :)

I need to pick out 2 or 3 craft projects I really want to finish during winter and start working on them. I'm constantly looking and checking new crafts out, that I haven't settled on some specific ones. Today I'm picking out specific ones and getting to it. :)

  12. That's just beautiful! I would withdraw and hibernate too if I lived there.

Here? We were in the 70s yesterday. I won't complain a bit though. 70s is cool to us, and the sun was shining.

  13. I just wanted to say thanks for your comment on my blog. I seem do being doing better this last week or so. I really think it's because I'm taking Omega 3. I'm not involved in too many things outside of the home, only our support group, so I don't have too many commitments. I'm just concentrating on resting and looking after my family.
    Blessings to you!
We've had snow too here this week, the kids are thrilled!

  14. Oh, how lovely your winter landscape is! We flirted with it briefly last weekend, but it's long gone now. I'm resigned to the thought that we may be done with winter this year; it's been so fickle all across the globe! You're very fortunate to have snow.

I, too, have the Nourishing Traditions book, and it is sitting on my shelf waiting for me. I'm trying to plan out my entire year right now, so I get done the things I *have* to so that I can do the things I *want* to... like NT. The boys and I are headed to an Amish grocery store on Monday to stock up on oats and wheat berries and a variety of other things.

I've missed you, and am hoping for a chatzy catch up one day soon. I'm free this afternoon if you're up for it. Otherwise, we'll figure something else out. :) Have a lovely day, my friend!
